about us

Hi, I'm Gene, the lady behind Sunny Folk – organic, carefree clothing for life’s sunniest (little) people.

Sunny Folk has been a dream of mine for an embarrassing amount of time, and once I had my first little one I realised I needed to practice what I was going to preach and start spending my ‘working’ days doing something I loved.

We are all about happy colours and playful prints that are hand drawn by me in Aotearoa, NZ inspired by the silliness of childhood.

An absolute non-negotiable for us is to produce as responsibly as we can, within our means. I say within our means as it's tough when you’re a small biz starting out, you want the gold standard but money and size of business means we don’t always have the negotiation power we’d like but we’re doing our best to be transparent in what we can achieve (for now) - disclosing our sewing partners and all our materials, but we absolutely acknowledge we have work to do - our biggest goal for the future is to reduce our carbon footprint through sea freight shipping and to obtain organic certifications for all our fabric (currently we have 90%).

For us, producing responsibly means:

  • Using more consciously produced materials - that's why we use 100% organic cotton (of which our knits are GOTs certified) and azo-free and plant-based dyes.
  • Offering quality clothes that don’t shrink after the first wash, or get holes after a few wears.
  • To work with sewers that are aligned to our values - paying at least minimum wage (in majority of cases paying a lot more), offering staff training opportunities and offering safe working environments.

I'm hugely proud of where we’ve got to but we're just getting started and your support (whether it’s a purchase, or simply a ‘like’ on social to let us know you like what we’re doing) is so appreciated.

Given we’re new around here, we would love to hear from you, so please do get in touch.

Gene xx
